Penelope shuddered. "On the coming equinox the Dominion bleed through." She'd felt that force like a poisonous cloud scrabbling at the edge of her consciousness, wanting nothing more than entrance into her mind. Not to kill her, nothing so simple as that.

It wanted to consume and suck away every last bit of joy from her existence, all her love and compassion, all her memories and experiences. If the Dominion prevailed on the equinox they would not kill, oh no, nothing so easy as that. They'd make the world no fit place to live and everyone would desire death.

Everyone would kill themselves.

"Yes. The Vampir evolved long ago out of a need for humans to protect themselves from the Dominion. We are the only thing standing between humanity and Hell. You were born marked for this responsibility, Penny, as was I."

He was right, of course. No marriage lay in her future.

No titled lords. No children. Gone were the beautiful gowns and the enchanting soirées. Gone were the gilded parlors and the carriages drawn by matched bays.

Her eyes narrowed. "You did this to me. I was marked, certainly. In some strange way I understand that. But my mark never had to be triggered. This never ha d to happen to me." Even as she said it, she r egretted it. She knew well that Aidan hadn't purposefully triggered her mark.

Guilt flooded his eyes and weariness etched itself into lines of his face. "I know. I didn't mean to do it. I never had any intention of Embracing you. It just happened. It was the lust between us, the desire."

Her legs gave out and he held her up. "I…I have to sit down," she whispered.

He helped her over and sat her on the edge of the bed, then sank down beside her.

She shook her head. "The worst of it is that I realize now that I'm not a lady, not at all, Vampir or not.

Thinking the thoughts I've had about you even before I came to New York, I was never a lady. I truly am the wicked person Horatia always said I was."

"You listen to me, Penny. You're not wicked."

"After what we did last night…out of wedlock…in a house of ill-repute? The worst part is that I should be mortifi ed beyond words. If I were a lady, I should regret every single second of it. I should bow my head in shame. But I don't regret it. Not at all. I must be a horrible person, Aidan. I must be-"
